What happens at an initial appointment?
Your first appointment begins with an in-depth discussion about what has brought you to physiotherapy. This may include the symptoms that are concerning you, bladder and bowel habits, obstetric/gynaecological history, pelvic health, medical history, and goals. Education is a huge part of all sessions, with the goal of helping you understand why symptoms are occurring and what influences them.
During this appointment a physical assessment may be performed. This could include assessment of your musculoskeletal system, movement patterns, abdominal function, hip range of movement, strength and pelvic floor function.
If appropriate and with your consent a pelvic floor assessment may be offered. This will be discussed in detail, with options provided and the benefits and limitations of each explained in full. Options may include:
Real-time ultrasound (Hurstville Private Location), allowing us to visualise bladder and pelvic floor muscle function, endurance and coordination
External (observation) vaginal assessment to assess muscle activation, take some objective measurements and view coordination of the pelvic floor
Internal vaginal examination, this is the gold standard for assessing pelvic floor strength, endurance and coordination and for assessment of prolapse.
An internal pelvic floor assessment is not automatically required and only performed with your consent after discussion.
We'll discuss what assessment is appropriate for you and always explain what we're recommending before proceeding.
